BREAKING NEWS:
In response to the HPAI (Avian Influenza) The Elbert County Fair is modifying the poultry show. We are not cancelling the market poultry show, however the show bird part of the show is being cancelled because any bird that would return to an existing flock will not be coming to fair. This includes all show birds and birds used for showmanship. This is a safety measure to limit the amount of comingling and exposure that your birds/ flocks always face when you take them to shows.
Showmanship with any animal is difficult to do and judge in a virtual environment, so we have elected to offer showmanship classes in person, but using stuffed animals. The Elbert County Fair Poultry Showmanship competition will take place Thursday August 4th starting around noon or immediately following the Market Show. We will find the most realistic stuffies that we can, so you can go through all the parts of the bird and display wings as best as possible.
The market bird show will be held in person and COMPLETELY TERMINAL. Exhibitors will be limited to 1 entry: that means either 1 pen of (3) market chickens, or 1 turkey - not both. Exhibitors will be required to bring their 1 entry to the fairgrounds to be weighed and banded on Thursday, August 4th 7-8:30 a.m. Health checks and testing requirements are being determined, with consideration and recommendations from the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Birds that make weight will be shown, placed, and taken to Simla to be processed that day, then put into the sale order for the Junior Market Sale held on Saturday, August 6th. Exhibitors are required to be present for the Market Sale, even though your birds will not be present. Birds that do not make weight will still show in either an over or under weight class and placed, taken to Simla to be processed (at exhibitors expense), but will NOT Sell in the Market Sale. No birds brought to the fairgrounds will be allowed to go back home, ALL entries will be taken by fair officials to the processor in Simla. Absolutely no exceptions!
Meat Bird weights (weights are for individual bird) are as follows:
Poultry (chicken) Meat Pens: 4.5 lbs - 6 lbs (fryers)
Poultry (chicken) Meat Pens: 6.1 -12 lbs (broilders)
Turkey: 14.1 - 34.0 lbs
Please contact Extension with any questions.
